This book is about love, sadness, and hatred. A boy named Joey has a big problem, his mean and scary mother hates the dad which is a nut job. There are other characters in the book too. There is the Grandma that won't quit smoking, the mean blind girl named Olivia, the home school teacher Mrs. Lapp, another man named Booth that the mother likes, and of course Pablo the little chihuahua that was dog napped.
At the beginning of the book the dad goes into the neighborhood on his motorcycle. When the mom sees the dad she tries to attack him with a broom, then he gets into an accident and has to go to the hospital. The next day he wasn't there. Joey finds a nurse that has his father's medicine that he had to take. Joey asks if hey could take the medicine to his father, but he can't. That night Booth comes over for dinner. He tries to make the Grandma like him, but she does not fall for it.
The next day the mom talks to Joey about being home schooled by a blind girl Olivia Lapp and her religious mother Mrs. Lapp.
